The garden

I've planted my very first garden. While we won't be able to survive very long off the grid, we may at least enjoy a few Mediterranean style dinners later this summer.

With the help of my mother-in-law I've got a cute little veggie and herb garden started. I planted two varieties of eggplant, two varieties of tomato, a few arugula, tarragon, sage, basil and cilantro. I'm optimistic that these will make a few delicious dinners come July and August. I was also the lucky recipient of several varieties of strawberry plants from a new gardening friend--these plants don't look that happy just yet but I'm optimistic that they will flourish with some love and water.

I also planted a very few flowers out front. There is now a little section in the very front yard of cosmos and marigolds. Luckily for us, the previous owner had a little bit of a green thumb. We have a gorgeous pink rose bush along the side of the house, and several very large hosta both in the front and along the side. There is also holly and laurel in the front. Ben just pruned everything way back and you can now both see the house and appreciate the beauty of the plants and shrubs.

Hopefully we haven't bitten off more than we can chew. If nothing else, we'll have a few good weeks of bloom about which to brag. And if we succeed, at least gift-giving will be easier; from what I understand, gardening can get quite addictive.
